19th Annual Administrative Appeals Tribunal National Mooting Competition for law students

The Honourable Justice Emilios Kyrou AO, President of the AAT, Senior Member Gina Lazanas and Senior Member Andrew Nikolic adjudicated the Grand Final which was held online on 10 October 2023.

The results were:

First place: Monash University
Runner Up: Queensland University of Technology
Best Advocate award: Mr Mridul Garg (Monash University)

Monash University also won our 2022 mooting competition.

The AAT’s mooting competition is a unique national competition where competitors participate in mock hearings based on the types of cases that come before the Tribunal. The competition has 5 rounds and runs over 4 months, with scenarios increasing in complexity as competitors progress through the rounds.

Competitors in the Grand Final were judged on their advocacy skills in the context of a case involving the income tax treatment of certain gambling winnings.

The Tribunal would like to thank Thomson Reuters and the Australian Institute of Administrative Law for their continued support of the competition by sponsoring the prizes.

Congratulations to all 10 teams who competed in this year’s competition. We recognise the immense effort put in by all involved.

The competitors represented law schools at the:

  • Australian National University
  • Bond University
  • Deakin University
  • Monash University (two teams)
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • University of New South Wales
