About Practice Directions and Guides

The President of the Tribunal may give directions as to the procedure of the Tribunal: subsection 20(2) of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975. These are known as practice directions. The following practice directions are currently in force:

  • General Practice Direction;
  • Practice Direction relating to Section 37 of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal Act 1975;
  • Listing and Adjournment Practice Direction;
  • Small Taxation Claims Tribunal Practice Direction;
  • Freedom of Information Practice Direction.

The Tribunal is undertaking a review over time of practice and procedure in each of its major jurisdictions. The review of each jurisdiction will result in the publication of a guide setting out general information about the review process in that jurisdiction. Specific requirements to be met in individual applications will be set out in directions made by Tribunal members and Conference Registrars.

The first phase of the review involved an examination of practice and procedure in the workers' compensation jurisdiction. The Guide to the Workers' Compensation Jurisdiction took effect on 30 April 2007.

The second phase of the review involved an examination of practice and procedure in the social security jurisdiction. The Guide to the Social Security Jurisdiction took effect on 19 May 2008.
