Reconciliation Action Plan
OUR VISION
To improve the quality of administrative decision-making through the provision of a review mechanism that is fair, just, economical, informal and quick.
OUR BUSINESS
The Administrative Appeals Tribunal is an independent body that reviews a wide range of administrative decisions made by Australian Government ministers, officials, authorities and other tribunals. The Tribunal can also review administrative decisions made by state government and non-government bodies in limited circumstances.
OUR APPROACH TO RECONCILIATION
The Tribunal is committed to the process of reconciliation between Indigenous and other Australians and recognises the importance of reconciliation to Australia's future.
The Tribunal is committed to promoting reconciliation within the Tribunal and across the broader Australian community, through the engagement of Indigenous Australian employees and promoting awareness of the Tribunal's services amongst Indigenous Australians.
OUR RECONCILIATION INITIATIVES
The Tribunal has and will continue to be committed to the following initiatives:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traineeship
The Tribunal has implemented an indigenous employment strategy, providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander trainees with an opportunity to learn basic clerical skills in preparation for a career in the Australian Public Service or elsewhere. The Tribunal's first trainee completed a one-year clerical traineeship in April 2006.
The Tribunal aims to offer two traineeships by 30 June 2008: one trainee will be located within the Tribunal's Principal Registry in Brisbane and the other will be based in the Perth Registry.
The responsibility to further deliver this initiative will rest with the Tribunal's Senior Management.
Liaison with Indigenous legal organisations
The Tribunal is currently working towards making significant improvements in its liaison and consultation with Indigenous legal organisations during 2007/2008. The Tribunal aims to arrange and conduct liaison meetings with at least three (3) indigenous organisations by 30 June 2008. The responsibility to further deliver this initiative will rest with the Tribunal's Senior Management.
The Action Plan will be primarily administered by the Tribunal's Workplace Diversity Committee.
Progress on each identified initiative will be reported to the Workplace Diversity Committee as monitored by the following persons/sections within the Tribunal:
- Principal Registrar and Assistant Registrar;
- District Registrars; and
- Human Resources.
